James Phillips, who died aged 36 in July 1995, was a composer, musician, bandleader and the voice and conscience of a generation of white South Africans.
He grew up in Springs, a working-class town on Johannesburg’s East Rand that became a hotbed of alternative music in the late 1970s. His songwriting blossomed through apartheid’s darkest years and into the dawning of a new South Africa.
